Ukiyo A building is located in Akakura, at the foot of Mt. Myoko. This is the first new-build in 70 years, due to its location within a national park. It was important to build relationships with the local residents and to coordinate with the various government ministries and local authorities. The design process was not linear, but rather by weaving together various lines. In snowy regions, there is a tendency for architecture to settle into a certain formation based on locally cultivated knowledge. Notwithstanding, we began with an adventurous premise of creating a new prototype, or to overturn a preconception that is entrenched in snowy regions. While maintaining functionality and comfort for living, our design process explored the possibility of optimizing the structure by making the roof slope(s) that would self-shed snow. Through trial and error, we finally designed a roof system that flows in multiple directions, like a ridge line connecting mountain ranges. With this being the first step, intention is to continue to create architecture that brings new vitality and identity to this region.

妙高山の麓に位置する赤倉の地にウキヨA棟はあります。近くには、岡倉天心が晩年を過ごしたところに、今では六角堂が往時の面影を残す静かな温泉郷です。ここは、国立公園内という特異性から、70年ぶりの新築になりました。そのため、周辺住民との関係構築や環境省など各省庁、自治体との調整が重要でした。デザインプロセスも決して線型ではなく、いろんな線を紡ぎながら完成に至ったプロジェクトです。豪雪地帯の建築は、培われてきた記憶と経験をもとに、ある一定の形態に落ち着く傾向があります。それでも新しいプロトタイプができないか、豪雪地帯特有の既成概念を一つでもひっくり返せないか、それら挑戦的な前提から計画を始めました。住むための機能性や快適性を保ちつつ設計を進める中で、雪が積もらない屋根の勾配にすることで構造を最適化するという一つの発想に至りました。バリエーションを試行錯誤した結果、多方向に流れるような、山脈をつなぐ稜線のような屋根になりました。この地域に新しい活気をもたらす息吹とアイデンティティを醸成してくれるような建築をこれからも作りたいと思います。
